The First Presbyterian Church of Dayton will be reviving an old tradition Oct. 23 by bringing back its harvest fair.
The fair is being revived after a long period to help show the community what the church has to offer, according to the Rev. Wendi Werner.
”My understanding is that it has been quite a few years since we held the harvest fair,” the Rev. Werner said. “A lot of folks in our congregation said it’s time to do this again and get the community to come out and see who we are at this moment.”
In addition, the Rev. Werner said the congregation hopes to help make the church more accessible to everyone.
”The purpose of bringing back the harvest fair is twofold,” the Rev. Werner said. “We want to bring the community to the church and have them see what a jewel we have in the downtown area. But this is an old building and there are accessibility issues. We have three levels that we need to get people to, otherwise our worship is not open to everybody. The funds raised will help with our ongoing efforts to become handicapped accessible.”
The Rev. Werner said making the church handicapped accessible would cost anywhere from $150,000 to $250,000.
The harvest fair will feature a church-wide rummage sale, games, pony rides, a bake sale, a tricky tray with baskets and gift certificates, along with food and refreshments. In addition there will be face painting and a visit from Melzo the Clown.
The harvest fair will be held on Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a rain date scheduled for Oct. 30.
”I hope people will gain a better sense of who the church community is and look at the history of our beautiful sanctuary,” the Rev. Werner said. “They will find us to be a welcoming place and this event will offer a great opportunity to spend time with fellow community members and family.”
