MANVILLE: Annual Foodfest to benefit squad

By Mary Ellen Zangara, Special Writer
Continuing the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Manville First Aid and Rescue Squad, the squad auxiliary will hold its ninth annual Foodfest of Manville on Sunday, Oct. 24, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the VFW on Washington Avenue.
The event helps raise funds for the First Aid and Rescue Squad.
”In the past every year because it has been in the fall, we have done anywhere from harvest to pumpkins and hay bales and one year we did Halloween. This time because it is the rescue squad’s 75th anniversary, we are saluting them. Colors will be the blue and gold which are their colors with balloons in the colors,” said Auxiliary President Betty Cowen, the event chairperson.
Food sampling from local and area restaurants is the highlight of the event. To date participating restaurants include Costco, Cyburts Liquor, Camplain Liquors, Dunkin’ Donuts, European Deli, Frank’s Pizza, Grub Hut, Jim’s Soft Pretzels, Manville Pastry Shop, Manville Pizzeria, Midtown Gourmet Deli, New Fortune, Pheasant’s Landing, Riverside Grill and Sandwiches, Sarah Janes, Somerset County VoTech high school and Uncle Ted’s Pizzeria.
This is the final fundraiser for 2010 as the auxiliary has already held its filet mignon dinner, and two flea markets.
”The profits that we realize are usually given at the end of the year to the squad at their installation dinner,” Ms. Cowen said.
There will also be free door prizes at FoodFest, and a Super Cash Raffle drawing at 8 p.m. Super Cash Raffle tickets are available from any Rescue Squad member.
Tickets for the Foodfest are $25 and need to be purchased in advance by calling Ms. Cowen at (908) 725-3694. A limited number of tickets will be sold at the door.
