"Between the Centuries: A Photographic Journey Back in Time" will be held Oct. 14from 7:30-9 p.m. at the Pennington Public Library. It is a slide presentation and talk by local historian Jack Koeppel. This is the first in a series to be given by the Hopewell Valley Historical Society. A limited number of the book, "Pennington Profiles," will be for sale for $25. The library is at 30 N. Main St.

Rummage sale
St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Pennington is having a Fall Rummage Sale on Oct. 15 and 16. It will feature a selection of clothing and accessories for men, women, and children. The sale is also a treasure trove of bargains of all kinds, from curios to children’s books, toys, kitchenwares, furniture, jewelry, and more. Hours are: Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and 6-8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon. Bag Sale is Friday night and Saturday. The church is at 300 S. Main St., Pennington.
Open Mic Night

Ted Stiles Hike on Baldpate
Join Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space for the annual memorial hike on the Ted Stiles Preserve at Baldpate Mountain on Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. Hikers will be led up the 1-mile Summit Trail to enjoy fall views from the top. The trail is rocky and steep in places, so sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Children under 5 may need assistance. An easier alternate route is available for anyone who chooses. Dogs are welcome, but must be on leash. Bring drinking water, a snack or even a picnic lunch to enjoy while taking in views of the Delaware River and beyond. Picnic tables are available. Meet at 10 a.m. in the parking area on Fiddler’s Creek Road, which is located a short distance from the gated driveway, about a quarter mile east of Route 29 in Titusville. Shredding Day
Hopewell Township will sponsor a Shredding Day on Oct. 16 at the Public Works Building, 203 Washington Crossing-Pennington Road, Titusville, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. This event is open to all Hopewell Township residents (no businesses) with a maximum limit of 10 boxes per household. Lasagna dinner
Hopewell Presbyterian Church will have a lasagna dinner Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. The cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. A portion of the proceeds will go to Christine’s Hope for Kids.
Spaghetti dinner
Trenton Cyrus Masons are holding a spaghetti dinner on Oct. 17 from 3-7 p.m. at 131 Burd St., Pennington. Everyone is invited. Cost of the dinner is $10 for adults; children under 6, free. Proceeds will benefit community charity programs. The Masons are also running the ChIPs (child identification program). It will be held at the hall for all children from toddlers to teens. There is no cost to register with ChIPS.
Garden Club
The Garden Gate Garden Club of Lawrenceville meets Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, 2688 Main Street (Route 206). Peggy Koehler will present "Designing on a Shoestring." She will provide ideas and tips on how to use containers from around the house, garden flowers, and grocery store florals. Attend Lions’ dinner
The Hopewell Valley Lion’s Club has been an active member of the Hopewell Valley since 1951, collecting and processing used eyeglasses, supporting Scouting, providing a scholarship to a graduating Central High School senior, sponsoring an after-school club at Timberlane Middle School, running the Duck Pool game booth at Hopewell Harvest Fair and Pennington Day, and many other activities. Community members are invited to a dinner meeting on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at H.I. Rib & Co., Route 31. The cost is $28 per person. Guest speaker will be Al Brewer from the New Jersey Eyeglass Center. HBA meets Oct. 21
The Hopewell Business Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the Hopewell Valley Bistro and Inn, East Broad Street in Hopewell. Sybil Holland, Hopewell photographer, will speak on "Tips and Tricks for Taking Great Photographs." Attendees are encouraged to come with questions for the presenter. Spaghetti dinner
Calvary Baptist Church of Hopewell will host a fundraising spaghetti dinner Oct. 23 from 4-7 p.m. Tickets are $10 ($5 for children) and should be purchased in advance from church members or by calling 466-1880 or e-mailing [email protected]. The menu includes dinner (several kinds of pasta), dessert (including three kinds of homemade ice cream), beverages and live music. Patrons are invited to bring canned goods or other nonperishable foods for the Hopewell Council of Churches’ food pantry and/or pennies for the "Pennies for Poverty" to support children in New Jersey who live under the poverty line (estimated around 235,000), which has been organized by the youth. Those bringing items for the food pantry can make a special request of the strolling musicians. The church is located at 3 E. Broad St., Hopewell Borough.
Hopewell curfew
Hopewell Borough Council has adopted a resolution that will impose a 9 p.m. curfew for the Halloween season. The curfew will be in effect Oct. 30-Nov. 1 and applies to anyone "under the age of 17 not accompanied by a parent or guardian." The curfew will be in "full force and effect" for the three days, from 9 p.m.-6 a.m. The dates include Halloween, Oct. 31, which falls on a Sunday this year.
Hopewell brush pickup
The Hopewell Borough Department of Public Works has announced that seasonal brush pickup will conclude on Oct. 29, making way for leaf collection during November and December. All brush must be stacked in an orderly fashion on the grass with cut ends facing the street. Small pieces and hedge clippings must be put in lawn bags. Brush must not block the sidewalk or be put in the street. Once leaf season begins, brush collection will be suspended until January, when crews return for holiday tree pickup. Deadline for grant is extended
The deadline to apply for a Pennington Day grant has been extended to Nov. 1. Visit penningtonday.com and click on the "grants info & application" tab to download and print out an application. Complete the form and mail it to the address listed. There is no fee to apply. Applications for a grant will be considered from groups and organizations throughout Hopewell Valley and Mercer County organizations serving Hopewell Valley residents. Grant recipients will be announced during the annual grants ceremony in January. Pennington Day Inc is a nonprofit organization.
Book Lover’s lunch
The Hopewell Valley Education Foundation will host its fifth annual Book Lover’s Luncheon on Nov. 14 at Greenacres Country Club, Lawrenceville. Speaker will be author Sheila Kohler, who will read from "Becoming Jane Eyre" and discuss her life as an author. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by mailing a check to the Hopewell Valley Education Foundation at P.O. Box 553, Pennington, 08534, or by visiting hvef.org and purchasing a ticket online. Proceeds will help support an author-in-residence program at the four Hopewell Valley elementary schools in the spring. Township final bulk, brush pickup
To arrange for a bulk waste pickup, call 737-0799, ext. 650, or stop at the Public Works facility, 203 Washington Crossing-Pennington Road, Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. In addition to five bulk items, residents are allowed four bags/boxes of miscellaneous junk (not to exceed 40 pounds) and one 32-gallon container of wood scraps/construction debris. Pickups are: Zone 3, Oct. 18. Bulk waste residents must call by Wednesday prior to the scheduled pickup week for their zone. Any residents unsure of their zone should call the Public Works Department. If this is the first scheduled pickup, it will be free. If not, a nonrefundable fee of $20 must be paid prior to the Wednesday prior to pickup. Final brush will be picked up same week – no call required. After the October pickups, the program will end and resume in January 2011. The fall leaf pickup program will start in October and run to the end of December.

Fellowship group
All community children in grades six-eight are invited to TGIF, an outreach ministry of The Pennington United Methodist Church. TGIF meets two Fridays a month from 7-8:30 p.m. as well as additional times for extra activities. Youth from several churches and those with no church affiliation and are from multiple communities are participating in fellowship, community service and exploring their relationships with God. Donations wanted
Those who want to help needy people in Africa and Central America while also helping Union Fire Company and Rescue Squad can donate items for Millennium International Textiles at a collection box at the firehouse on Route 29 in Titusville. Needed items include clothing of all types, linens (bed sheets, blankets, curtains and the like), shoes (no winter boots), accessory items such as handbags, belts, baseball caps, wallets, backpacks and travel bags and hard or soft toys smaller than 14 inches in size. Furniture, large items and tires will not be accepted. In exchange for providing a location for the collection box, Union is paid $150 a month by Millennium International Textiles. Shade tree group has openings

St. Michael’s mugs
The Hopewell Business Association’s St. Michael’s mugs are available for purchase at Hopewell Pharmacy. The price is $10 per mug. The supply is limited. Proceeds will benefit HBA and the D&R Greenway Land Trust’s St. Michael’s tract preservation efforts.
Hopewell Farmers market
The Hopewell Farmers Market is open Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m. at the Railroad Station, Railroad Place. Shoppers will find Olssons Fine Foods (international cheeses, Griggstown meats, international and local pantry items); Village Bakery (bread, cookies and pastries); North Slope Farm (vegetables and fruits); Highland Gourmet (all-natural beef, fresh mushrooms, homemade baked goods, local honey); WoodsEdge Wool Farm (alpaca and llama fashion); and Guzikowski Eggs (fresh local eggs).
Artists gatherings

Buy a Brick for walkway
The Hopewell Valley Veterans Association is seeking donations for personalized memorial bricks that will line the walkway at Alliger Park. Veterans and nonveterans are invited to purchase bricks to honor those who served their country. Bricks can be engraved with up to 15 characters per line (three lines total) and can include years of service, rank, and unit etc. Nonveteran and family bricks may include a family’s name and an expression of appreciation. Hopewell Borough Adopt-a-Flag
The Hopewell Fire Department and Emergency Medical Unit is sponsoring an Adopt-a-Flag program. Residents can purchase an American flag through the department. The flags are used to line Broad Street in Hopewell Borough from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Adopt-a-Flag for Pennington
Through the Adopt-a-Flag program, Public Works employees assist the Pennington Parks and Recreation Commission every spring and fall by hanging flags in honor of veterans, loved ones and citizens. Donations are being accepted for flags to be displayed within the borough from May to September. Purchases and personal dedications can be made by completing an Adopt-a-Flag form, along with a tax-deductible check of $42, which can be found at Borough Hall or on Facebook.
Camp open houses
Rambling Pines Day Camp will host open houses on Oct. 17, Jan. 9 and 23, Feb. 6 and 27, March 13 and 27, April 10, and May 1 from 1-3 p.m. Parents and children are invited to attend the open house, tour the facility and meet some of the staff members.
