Evening Book Club: “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” by James Joyce. This semi-autobiographical novel depicts the formative years in the life of Stephen Dedalus, a fictional alter ego of Joyce and a pointed allusion to the consummate craftsman of Greek mythology, Daedalus. The novel traces the intellectual, religious and philosophical awakening of young Stephen Dedalus as he begins to question and rebel against the Catholic and Irish conventions in which he has been raised. 7 p.m. Free. Meet author Elena Gorokhova whose memoir, “A Mountain of Crumbs,” has been called the Russian equivalent of “Angela’s Ashes.” An intimate collection of memories about the deprivations and joys or her childhood in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in the ‘60s and ‘70s, the author will speak about these experiences. Kaleidoscope Chamber Music: Westminster Conservatory’s Kaleidoscope Chamber Series will open the new season with a recital of music for mixed ensembles at 8 p.m. in Gill Memorial Chapel on the Rider University campus. Admission is free. The program will include music written in a variety of instrumental combinations and styles. A highlight will be the premiere of the Quintet in C for Clarinet and String Quartet by Hopewell resident Samuel Livingston. Rum & Onions XXXI: Princeton Country Dancers will host Rum & Onions XXXI, the group’s annual Halloween contra dance party, at the Lawrence Intermediate School, 66 Eggerts Crossing Road. Featuring caller Tony Parkes and the Rum & Onions Very Big Band. Admission $22/full day, $12/afternoon, $17/evening. Discounts available for students (with ID) and seniors (65 and over).
