The Manville Public Library book sale is continuing at the library. Purchase the donated and surplus books to help support the library. Hard cover books for 50 cents; soft cover 25 cents each — or by the bag for $2.
Saturday, Oct. 23
The Manville Education Association is conducting a Manville High School Scholarship Clothing Drive on Oct. 23. Drop off any usable clothes, fabrics and small toys at the Brooks Boulevard and 12th Street student parking lot between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. All items should be in plastic bags and shoes in a separate bag. No walkers, play centers, strollers or furniture can be accepted. All proceeds will go directly to a scholarship for a graduating senior. For more information, contact Angele Palmer at 908-231-6810.
PowerHouse Gym will host a two-day fundraising event to benefit the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Oct. 23 and Oct. 24. The gym, at 129 Stryker Lane in HIllsborough, will offer exercise classes and workout time open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $5, with all proceeds going to Race for the Cure. The ninth annual Foodfest of Manville, sponsored by the Manville First Aid and Rescue Squad, will feature food samplings from local and area restaurants at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2290, on Washington Avenue. Tickets are $25, and can be reserved by calling 908-725-3694. The event includes free door prizes, and a “super cash raffle” drawing at 8 p.m. Limited tickets sold at door.
The Central Jersey Symphony Orchestra will open its 41st season with a birthday celebration at the Theater at Raritan Valley Community College at 3 p.m. Oct. 24. The program will include performances of John Williams’ “Happy Birthday Variations,” Jean Sibelius’ Symphony no. 2 and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, written for violin, viola and orchestra. Tickets for the performance are $20, $15 for seniors and $10 for students, and are available through the Theater’s box office as well as the orchestra’s website, www.cjso.org

The Manville Education Foundation Golf Outing will be held Oct. 28 at Hillsborough Golf and Country Club, on Wertsville Road in Hillsborough. Fees are $125 per golfer, which includes golf, lunch, dinner buffet and prizes at Gattos Sports Café. Tee sponsorships are available for local businesses at $100 each — all proceeds benefit the MEF, and are used for scholarships and other education support. Looking ahead
The Heritage Trail Association and the 2010 Leadership Somerset class will host Haunted History at the historic Van Horne House in Bridgewater, Oct. 29. The event will include a ghost tour conducted by renowned local psychic Jane Doherty, as she explores the possible haunting of the Van Horne House. Learn about local folklore, listen to stories that describe actual historical events that occurred in the Van Horne House and take part in the first ever paranormal exploration of the building. Guests will also hear stories from historian and author, Donald J. Peck, detailing exciting and interesting events and possible paranormal activity at other central New Jersey historically significant locations. Two sessions will be held: 7 p.m. -8:30 p.m. (open to everyone, including children supervised by a parent or guardian) and 9 p.m. -10:30 p.m. (open to adults and adult-supervised teens over 16). The cost is $10 for adults and teens over the age of 16 years (either session) and $5 per child under the age of 13 years attending the early session. Light seasonal refreshments will be served. Halloween at the Y, a free, family event will be held at the Hillsborough Family YMCA and Somerville Family YMCA from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 29 with DJs, crafts, snacks and more. Manville Municipal Alliance and Manville Recreation will host Twist and Shout – Drugs are Out Red Ribbon Week Sock hop dinner and dance 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Manville/Hillsbrough Elks Lodge on Brooks Boulevard. The Manville Democratic Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 4 in the Annex room at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2290. The committee meets on the first Thursday of every month. Thomas J Kavanaugh Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2290 and its Ladies Auxiliary will hold its annual Veterans Day Memorial Service at the post, located at 600 Washington Ave. in Manville at 10 a.m. Nov. 7. Food and beverages will be available following the service.
The Manville Borough Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in the municipal courtroom.
The Manville Youth Athletic League will host a Support for Sports Basket Auction Nov. 12 at the VFW Post.
