Womanspace cordially invites the public to celebrate the ninth year of Communities of Light in Mercer County on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 5:30 p.m., at the annual launch event and reception at Project Freedom, 1 Freedom Blvd., Lawrence, near Route 206 and Brunswick Circle.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno will serve as honorary chair for the Womanspace Communities of Light campaign. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the organizers hope many people will join Womanspace Event Chairs Kristin Marvin Keller and Christine Clayton and many more supporters at Project Freedom.
A special program and ceremonial lighting will serve as a powerful symbol of hope for all those who struggle with violence in their homes. The evening includes free refreshments, local entertainment, and a message from Lt. Gov. Guadagno. The program begins promptly at 5:30 p.m., rain or shine. Call Womanspace at (609) 394-0136 to RSVP before Oct. 25.
Communities of Light is an annual public awareness campaign and fundraiser designed to bring multiple New Jersey counties together to raise awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault and services available to victims and survivors in their community.
Several domestic violence agencies join with Womanspace in selling luminary kits (containing votive candles, bags and instructions) and then lighting the candles at dusk on a night during the winter solstice, which this year is Monday, Dec. 13.
Volunteers throughout the state will coordinate participation within their neighborhoods, businesses, faith-based and community organizations to illuminate the night and send the message that "peace begins at home."
The $10 luminary kits will be available for sale at the launch event as well as at several retail locations throughout Mercer County in November. Also, kits can be ordered online at www.womanspace.org.
