The New Egypt High football team moved one step closer to history with its 24-6 win over Robbinsville last Friday night.
"That was a big win for us," said New Egypt coach Luke Sinkhorn, whose team improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Freedom Division of the West Jersey Football League.
"Burlington City is our last game in the division so if we can win this week it will be our first division title and first banner. We hadn’t won before in the Burlington County League and this is the first year of the West Jersey League." New Egypt took care of the Ravens the same way they have their opponents in four other wins. They played solid swarming defense and used a balanced offense to generate enough scoring.
"Robbinsville was a good, well-coached team," Sinkhorn said. "They played hard and it was a tough game. We started off with a good drive and scored and then we added on a field goal and another score and had a nice lead at halftime. But then they scored right off the kickoff to start the second half.
"But we held them after that and responded and got another touchdown late. It was a good game."
The Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead after a 1-yard touchdown run by Tyler Miller. They added another touchdown when Jamel Smith tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Massa. Smith then added a field goal for a 17-0 halftime lead.
"Jamel had another big game," Sinkhorn said. "We’ve been trying to get him the ball different ways and he was over 100 yards rushing again this week. Our fullback also had a nice game and our quarterback had some good throws. We’ve tried to be well balanced on offense." Jordan Hankins ran back the second half kickoff for a touchdown to cut the lead to 17-6. But the Warriors would not allow another points and Dylan Wills added a fourth quarter touchdown to account for the rest of the scoring.
Now New Egypt faces Burlington City with a chance to win its first football title.
"You have to find something each week to motivate the players," Sinkhorn said. "They want to come out strong and be the first team to put a banner up."
Robbinsville fell to 2-5 with the loss. The Ravens will host Clayton on Friday night.
