Cantors ensemble to perform in Howell

HOWELL — The nationally renowned New Jersey Cantors Concert Ensemble will perform at Congregation Ahavat Olam, 106 Windeler Road, Howell, on Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. The Hanukkah concert will celebrate the completion of a new synagogue building that opened in September.

“We eagerly anticipate the unique opportunity to hear the New Jersey Cantors Concert Ensemble perform in our acoustically tuned sanctuary,” said Arlene Schwartz, president. “This is the inaugural event for the new synagogue building. We look forward to showcasing our beautiful building to the community.”

The New Jersey Cantors Concert Ensemble will perform a full-length concert of Jewish choral music and solo cantorial music of the synagogue. The program will include classical and traditional Israeli, Yiddish, Hassidic and Sephardic music. Many of the selections are modern, upbeat and even humorous.

Cantor David Amar of Congregation Ahavat Olam, who is a member of the ensemble, will perform in the concert along with the Congregation Ahavat Olam children’s choir.

According to a press release, the New Jersey Cantors Concert Ensemble is the world’s first choir of men and women cantors. Composed of more than 20 cantors, the ensemble is sponsored by the New Jersey Region of the Cantors Assembly and is renowned across the country.

Members of the ensemble include cantors of Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist synagogues in northern and central New Jersey. The funds raised at their concerts go toward scholarship assistance for cantorial students at the Jewish Theological Seminary, Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion and the Academy for Jewish Religion. None of the ensemble members accepts any money for rehearsal, performance or travel.
