– A blackboard, which is dated back to Dec. 21, 1944, was accidentally discovered when workmen from the Scozarri Co. were working in the Old School.
"We pulled down the pegboards and saw all this stuff still written on the board," said Jimmy Hutchinson, one of the workmen.
On the board was a lesson plan, the temperature, 30 degrees, and preparations for a Christmas party. Also on the board was a list of the first names of classmates, whom members of the school board and Historical and Preservation Society are attempting to identify.
– The Medical Center at Princeton has announced the following births: a boy to Robert and Melanie Joyce, Oct. 1 and a boy to Gregory Sarafin and Swati Lele.
– The Cranbury School boy’s soccer team has won the Tri-County Conference championship with a 9-0 victory over New Egypt. Kevin Wagner exploded for four goals, and Peter Teifer scored three in that game.
25 Years Ago – 1985
– The Cranbury school board will appeal a state decision that the Cranbury teen-agers continue to attend Lawrence High School.
The board wants to send them to Princeton High School. The appeal will be to the state Board of Education, and it could take up to a year to be heard.
Saul Cooperman, the state Commissioner of Education, recently upheld a decision by an administrative law judge requiring Cranbury’s 85 ninth- through 12-graders to continue going to Lawrence High. The board has spent about $35,000 in legal fees for this case.
– E.R. Squibb & Sons., a manufacturer of pharmaceuticals, plans to put a national distribution warehouse and office in Cranbury.
It will be located to the north side of Prospect Plains Road. The single-story facility will be built on 23 acres and will be 206,000 square feet. Between 75 and 100 employees are expected to work there.
50 Years Ago – 1960
– Cranbury has made a notable contribution to the Hightstown Theatre Guild, the newly organized little theatre group, which will present the musical comedy "Plain and Fancy," at the New Hights Theater in Hightstown.
Bill Eller is co-starring with Paula Resnick of Hightstown. Robert Wojciechowski of Cranbury, in addition to singing in the chorus, is one of the featured dancers. Cranbury’s Polly Langdown also sings with the group.
– Forty-two students of the Cranbury School received awards from the Cranbury Public Library.
Mrs. Ralph Reece, librarian, presented attractive bookmarks to the students. Included among those cited are: Robert Bencze, Robert Cox, Fran Solow, Alan Danser, Greg Meyers, Michael Bencze, Ralph Davies, Sharon Smatusek, Craig Sechler, Faith Cox and Bonnie Beckford.
75 Years Ago – 1935
– Mr. and Mrs. Clarence M. Perrine celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of their marriage at the Geneva Inn.
Invited guests were members of the club to which they belong. Following the dinner, the party returned to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Perrine for a social evening.
– A first-class fruit and vegetable market will be opening in the Cranbury Meat Market building at 99 North Main Street. P. Phillips is the owner.
100 Years Ago – 1910
– A large and fashionable audience gathered by invitation in the Second Presbyterian church to witness the marriage of Miss Bessie Elberta Stults, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lemuel Stults and Clarence McLean Perrine, son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Perrine.
The bride and groom are very popular in society and musical circles. The wedding gifts were very costly and unusually handsome and numerous and will be of much value in their home.
JAMESBURG AND MONROE
10 Years Ago — 2000
– The Pumpkin Patch, home of the Jamesburg Fire Department, will be the site of the festivities Saturday, Oct. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Clowns, games, rides, cookies and fun will be featured.
– Brandeis Women of Clearbrook invite those who are interested to travel to San Diego, Calif., from Feb. 2 to March 1, 2001.
The package is scheduled so as to escape the New Jersey winter. Transportation as well as furnished apartment with maid serve is included.
25 Years Ago – 1985
– The Monroe High boys soccer team won three more games last week to improve its record to 21-1.
High-scoring Rich Palumbo, the all-time leading scorer at Monroe, broke the century mark in career goals by recording his 100th in the Falcons’ 8-2 win over Bishop Ahr. He had three goals in that game.
– Congratulations to Kathy and Joe Fiumenero of Vine Street, Jamesburg, who celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary on October 26.
– It’s a son for Diane and David Linke of Harrigan Avenue, Monroe.
Jeffrey David arrived October 15 at St. Peter’s Medical Center, New Brunswick, and weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces. He was welcomed by his sister, Kristin, 3, and his proud grandparents, Leslie and Marvin Linke of Monroe and Claire and Leon Detz of Jackson.
– Enrolled in the freshman class at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., are Victor Alteria of Madison Avenue, Monroe, and Richard DeSalvo of North Rhoda Street, Monroe.
Victor is a graduate of Monroe Township High School and plans to study computer science. Richard is a graduate of The Peddie School and he will major in engineering.
50 Years Ago – 1960
– The Monroe Township Board of Education appointed Wilton Clayton, Jr. to membership on the board to replace Robert Reid, who recently resigned.
– Cana conferences will be introduced to the Cranbury area by St. Anthony’s R.C. Church of Hightstown.
The informal series of talks for married couples will be given by the Rev. Thomas Dentici. All married couples are invited to attend a Mr. and Mrs. Night in St. James Hall, Jamesburg. A panel of couples from the Trenton diocese will explain the nature of the Cana conferences.
– Roger L. Dreyling, a student at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis R. Dreyling of Gatzmer ave., Jamesburg.
– The wedding of Miss Annette Marie Pepe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pepe of New st., Jamesburg, and Wallace Jacob Dallenbach of Rhode Hall rd., East Brunswick, took place in St. James R.C. Church, Jamesburg.
The Rev. James Leary officiated.
The bride is a Jamesburg High School graduate and is employed by the Boy Scouts of America. The bridegroom was graduated from South River High School and is employed by the Dallenbach Sand Co.
75 Years Ago – 1935
– Fire did considerable damage to the A&P Store at Jamesburg last Thursday.
The building is owned by Abraham Sells, who has a dry goods store next to the grocery. The Sells family and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Burslem live over the stores.
Both Jamesburg fire companies responded. The fire started in the rear of the grocery store where a small stove had been lighted.
100 Years Ago – 1910
