A 24-year-old township resident was killed as a result of a car accident Monday afternoon in Franklin Township.
Christopher Ward, of Monmouth Junction, was traveling south on Canal Road when his vehicle left the road and struck a utility pole, according to Franklin police.
At 2:42 p.m., Franklin police received multiple 911 calls reporting a serious motor vehicle crash on Canal Road between Butler Road and Suydam Road. Upon arrival, officers found a severely damaged 2009 Nissan Altima in the road, according to police.
Police said Mr. Ward was unconscious and unresponsive. Emergency personnel were able to remove Mr. Ward from the car and immediately began performing first aid, police said.
Mr. Ward was transported by helicopter to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick by New Jersey State Police helicopter. Mr. Ward was later pronounced dead of his injuries.
Canal Road was closed until about 6:30 p.m. while members of the Franklin Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau and the Somerset County prosecutor’s office Collision Analysis Reconstruction Unit investigated the crash.
