MONROE – "Holiday Happening," the League of Women Voters of Monroe Township’s annual winter social event, will be held Nov. 15 at the Forsgate Country Club.
Since the luncheon will take place shortly after the 2010 midterm elections, the guest speaker, Ingrid Reed, has chosen her topic as "Election is Over. What Happened?"
The luncheon will start at noon. Reservations must be made with Doris Altman, 4 John Adams Court, 609-655-5932. The cost is $32, and members and guests are urged to make their reservations now since seating is limited.
Ms. Reed has an audience among League members as well as the general public. Recently retired from her position as director of the New Jersey Project at Rutgers Eagleton Institute of Politics, she chairs the governor’s Task Force on Local Government Ethics.
She has spent many years researching and analyzing state politics and planning, governance and community affairs, both as a professional and as a volunteer. A founding member of NJ Future, she also serves on the board of NJ Spotlight.com, a new civic journalism website designed to provide news coverage about critical issues shaping the state and its communities.
While at Eagleton, Ms. Reed’s work focused on encouraging voter participation and confidence in elections and government.
She recently issued a report on New Jersey newspaper coverage of the contests for the governor and the Legislature in 2005 and 2009. Before joining Eagleton Institute in 1996, she was vice president for public affairs and corporate secretary of the Rockefeller University in New York City, and served as assistant dean of Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs where she also directed the Rockefeller Public Service Awards Program.
Her knowledge of the state and her insights into the politics have made her a well-known name on the op-ed pages of area newspapers.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization with state and national affiliations. Celebrating its 90th year, League members focus on public policy issues on national and state levels as well as participating in local activities.
