The Hopewell boys 4th-grade travel basketball team opened its season with a 28-24 win over South Brunswick. The team was led by Patrick Mormile and received strong play by Luke Wittenborn and Milo De Los Santos. Dalton Fellows and Jimmy O’Connor rebounded well, while Hunter Oshman led the defense with support from Carmen Zangrilli and Zach Perone.
The U11 boys opened with a 35-17 win against the Monmouth Rebels as Robbie Wiley had 15 points, followed by Cole Hare (6), Max DeLosSantos (4), Alex Mummert (4), Patrick Higgins (3), Andy Blake and Domenic Zangrilli (2 each). Also contributing with tough defense and strong rebounding were Max Brass, Connor Murphy, and Jack Demareski.
A day later the U11’s topped Bucks County, 28-20, in Central Jersey League play as Wiley had 12 points, followed by Hare (5), Higgins (4), DeLosSantos (3), Blake and Zangrilli (2 each). Brass and Murphy controlled the boards Mummert played strong perimeter defense.
The 6th-grade girls took a 19-4 CJYBL win over Montgomery as Kirsten Long had eight points while Niamh Harkins and Sydney Malone had four each and Gabrielle Kszak added three. Juliana Meluskey, Elyse Nardozza, Megan Radice and Ava Tartaglia were strong defensive performers and keys to Hopewell’s successful full court press.
