An 83-year-old school crossing guard was hospitalized early Tuesday morning after a car on Lawrence Road hit him.
Anthony Sebasto landed on the hood of the car, struck his head on the windshield and then rolled off into the street, township police said. He came to rest in the middle of the crosswalk on Eggerts Crossing Road.
The Drexel Avenue resident was setting up his school crossing guard post when he was struck by a 2008 Honda Accord driven by John H. Clay, 63, of Holland, Pa., at 6:47 a.m., police said. He was wearing his school crossing guard vest.
Mr. Sebasto, who has worked as a school crossing guard for 12 years, was crossing Lawrence Road when he was struck, police said. The driver told police he saw the victim in the middle of the southbound lane of Lawrence Road, but could not stop in time and struck him.
Mr. Sebasto suffered a cut on his forehead, several broken bones and a possible concussion, police said. He was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he remained hospitalized Wednesday as The Ledger went to press.
Police Lt. Mark Ubry described Mr. Sebasto as dedicated and professional.
”He was very popular with the kids,” Lt. Ubry said. “He passed out potato chips to the kids and he gave them balloons on the last day of school.”
The accident is still under investigation, police said. Persons who may have information on the accident are asked to call Police Officer Marc Poveromo at 609-896-1111.
