Michael Caggiano, 14, an eighth-grader from Manalapan, has been selected to kick in the Youth All-American game in San Antonio, Texas, on Jan. 9. Caggiano competed in camps throughout the country and earned a No. 2 kicker in the country ranking from Football University, Rivals and Eastbay. Caggiano, who recorded a 47-yard field goal, had kicks from both hash marks — 30-, 35- and 40-yard field goals — and kickoffs to the 15 yard line at the camps. He is the first New Jersey kicker to earn these honors. The youth teams will be honored at the High School All-American game sponsored by the U.S. Army and televised on NBC on Jan. 8 in San Antonio.
The 47th annual Asbury Park Polar Bear Races will be held Dec. 26. The Polar Bear 5-mile run will start at 1 p.m. at Convention Hall, and will be preceded by the Polar Bear 10-mile racewalk and 5-mile health walk at 10 a.m. The post-run Polar Bear ocean dip is an optional event. David Hayes rushed for 49 yards on eight carries in the University of Delaware’s 16-3 victory over New Hampshire on Dec. 10 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinals in Newark, Del. Hayes, who is a sophomore, was most effective in the fourth quarter as he helped the Blue Hens control the clock by picking up rushing first downs. The Blue Hens (11-2), the No. 3 seed in the playoffs, will host Georgia Southern (10-4) on Dec. 18 at noon in the semifinals. Hayes, a Howell High School graduate, has rushed for 470 yards and four touchdowns for the Blue Hens in 2010.
The Garden State Select 11U travel baseball program will hold tryouts throughout December for the 2011 season. The team is looking for a catcher, a solid outfielder and good pitching. The team will play in Diamond Nation’s winter league in Flemington (January to early February.); train indoors at CK’s in Morganville (January to mid-March); play in two spring leagues; summer and fall leagues; six to eight tournaments, including the Ripken tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. (July 4 weekend), and Woodbat in Aberdeen, Md. (June 11-12). The team will practice at least two times per week throughout the year, and will largely be trained by professionals, including a former major leaguer. The Colonial Basketball League will hold registration through Dec. 17 at 5 p.m. at the YMCA Community Center, 41 Center St., Suite 2, Freehold. The basketball league is for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The cost for the instructional program is $85, and the cost for the recreation league is $95. Jason Goldheimer, a senior guard at Delaware Valley College, is off to the best start of his basketball career. The Manalapan High School graduate is averaging 12.6 points per game for the Aggies (2-3). He leads the team in three-point field goals (16), lifting his career total to 145, just 12 away from moving to No. 2 all-time in career three-pointers. Goldheimer led the Aggies in three-point field goals last year with 45. Goldheimer has been a letter winner for three years at the Doylestown, Pa., school.
