YMCAs to host 22nd annual MLK memorial breakfast

The Community YMCA and the YMCA of Western Monmouth County will host the 22nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast on Jan. 17.

The event will celebrate of the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and will be held 8-10 a.m. at Branches, 123 Monmouth Road in West Long Branch.

A minister, speaker and civil rights activist, Dr. King founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and promoted the cause of equal rights through nonviolent demonstrations. Some 200,000 people joined him in the March on Washington in 1963. He was the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 at age 35.

The breakfast program will include a presentation by guest speaker Dr. Walter Greason, associate professor of history and American studies and coordinator of the African American and Africana Studies Program at Ursinus College. Also, the event will feature inspirational readings and musical selections by youths from the YMCA’s Leaders and Teen Achievers programs in Monmouth County.
