The Princeton University women’s ice hockey team ended 2010 on a high note with a 3-0 win over No. 5 Boston College on Friday.
Both teams were missing players who were attending the USA Hockey Training Camp in Minnesota, but the Tigers missed Sasha Sherry less than the Eagles missed their representatives.
Julie Johnson scored a pair of goals, and Sally Butler scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Rachel Weber made 24 saves for the shutout as the Tigers, who won for the fourth straight time to improve to 7-10-1. Three of its last four wins have come via shutout.
The Tigers were scheduled to host Quinnipiac on Monday.
Dan Mavraides had 20 points for the Princeton men’s basketball team, but the Tigers came up just short of their upset attempt of host Central Florida, 68-62, at the UCF Holiday Classic championship game on Thursday. Mavraides and Ian Hummer, who added 19 points in the loss, were named to the all-tournament team.
Douglas Davis scored 14 points, and with his two 3-pointers moved past head coach Sydney Johnson into fourth-place all-time with 163 career 3s.
Princeton led, 8-0, at the start and held an eight-point lead at halftime before the Knights rallied in the second half. Mavraides scored 18 points in the first half, while Hummer tallied 11 points in the second half.
Kareem Maddox was one of four Princeton players in double figures in their UCF opener. The senior forward had 19 points in a 65-63 win over Northeastern on Wednesday.
The Tigers fell to 10-4 with the loss. They will host Marist 7 p.m. Wednesday at Jadwin Gym.
The Princeton men’s ice hockey team defeated Connecticut, 4-1, Thursday in the championship game of the Toyota UConn Hockey Classic. It is their first in-season tournament title since the 1998-99 season.
Taylor Fedun scored on Princeton’s first shot of the game, and Sean Bonar made 14 saves to keep it 1-0 after the first period. Jeremy Goodwin scored his first collegiate goal in the second period to build the lead, and after a UConn score the Tigers got goals late in the third period from Eric Carlson – his first collegiate goal as well – and Kevin Lohry.
Lohry had a pair of goals as the Tigers rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the final 10 minutes of the tournament opener to beat Bowling Green, 4-2, Wednesday. Derrick Pallis provided the game-winner and Andrew Ammon added an insurance goal.
Fedun was named the MVP, and he, Lohry and Ammon were named to the all-tournament team. Princeton improved to 10-5-0 with the win. They were scheduled to play Quinnipiac on Monday.
Garrett Frey and Daniel Kolodzik both placed for the Princeton wrestling team at the Southern Scuffle on Thursday. Frey, a sophomore, finished eighth at 125 pounds. He lost in overtime, 8-6, to third-seeded Ben Kjar of Utah Valley, but returned to top George Mason’s Zach Huxford. He had to injury default his final match for eighth.
Kolodzik, a junior, also finished eighth, at 157 pounds. He gave Indiana finalist Paul Young his toughest test before falling, 5-3, in overtime. He beat Aarin Hynes of Michigan, 6-0, before losing his final two bouts to finish eighth.
The Tigers placed 23rd overall. Last year, they played 29th and did not have any place-winners.
