Hundreds of kids and adults in the Trenton Area had coats and gloves this winter by delivery made through Interfaith Caregivers Youth Group .
The Interfaith Caregivers Youth Group collected 150 gently used coats for needy families through the Trenton Ecumenical Area Ministry (TEAM). Thanks to the group many families can be warm this winter. The Interfaith Caregivers Youth Group is a teen group that volunteers with the elderly and does projects around the community. Started about 2 months ago the group has successfully done two projects, the coat drive and giving out holiday cards to elderly people at the Elms of Cranbury nursing home. Started by Yamini Bhandari a sophomore at High School South, the group meets outside of school on Saturdays planning and executing monthly projects. “Bhandari says, I started volunteering in 8th grade and what I learned from it was to respect older people and learn from their experiences, that’s the philosophy of this whole thing. As neighbors it is our duty to help elderly people live on their own, with a little help. Throughout the experience you meet truly inspirational people and that is what makes it so much fun!” Bhandari also says, “My grandparents live in India, and because they live so far, it’s hard for me to meet and learn from them, so it is nice to see older people here and get that experience.” Anyone between the ages of 13-17 are welcome to join, and will be receiving community service hours too. If you are interested in joining or wish to get any more information about the group, please feel free to email :[email protected]
