Martin Luther King to Be Remembered at Har Sinai Temple

SPECIAL CONCERT AND DOCUMENTARY FOR MLK DAY AT HAR SINAI
 
HOPEWELL TWP. – "From Slavery to Freedom," an afternoon of songs incorporating the multi-cultural Jewish heritage, Afro-American spirituals and even a bit of Broadway will be held at Har Sinai Temple Jan. 16 at 1:30 p.m.
            The concert that will commemorate both Martin Luther King and Shabbat Shirah, a service that includes a Torah reading containing the "Song of the Sea" sung after the Israelites made their passage through the Red Sea.
            "This year, as often happens, Shabbat Shirah, when we chant the song of thanksgiving, occurs on the birthday weekend of Dr. Martin Luther King,” explains Cantor Emily Pincus of Har Sinai. "To mark the event, we have prepared a very special concert that celebrates Jewish and African American experiences of faith as deliverance."
            The Adult and Children’s Choirs of Har Sinai, as well as other Temple members, will accompany Cantor Pincus in song..
            Before the concert, a documentary on the little-know partnership between King and the spiritual leader Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel during the Civil Rights era of the 1960s and early 1970s will be shown. Har Sinai’s Rabbi Stuart Pollack, who knew Heschel personally, will share his reminiscences of the man.
            The concert and short documentary are open to the public, with admission of $10 per adult and $5 for children. Har Sinai is located at 2421 Pennington Rd. at Denow Road West. For information and reservations, call the temple at (609) 730-8100.
