Princeton Tiger Lilies girls’ travel ice hockey teams showed their mettle last week at the 26th annual Connecticut Polar Bears Holiday Tournament, posting wins over perennially tough New England teams.
The Tiger Lilies 14U squad tied the Buffalo Regals for first in its division, going 3-1. Princeton started the tournament with a 2-0 win over the Rhode Island Panthers as Amanda Sabia and Erin Dillon scored goals with goalie Giana Rifici getting the shutout.
A day later, the Tigers Lilies blanked the Assabet Valley (Mass.) Blue Major team 4-0. Sabia scored two goals in the win with Becca Drake adding the other two. Goalie Katie Alden posted the shutout.
After falling 2-0 to the Regals on Wednesday morning, Princeton came back for a 4-0 win over Assabet Valley (Mass.) Blue Minor squad that evening. Ali Louie scored two goals in the victory with Sabia and Drake chipping in one apiece and Alden earning the shutout in goal. The Tiger Lilies, though, missed out on the playoffs due to the period points tiebreaker, ending up fifth of the 16 teams in the 14B age group.
The Tiger Lilies 16U squad also picked up some big wins as it competed in the 17A age group. Princeton topped Charles River 16-2 (Mass.) 3-1 and the New England Junior Falcons (Mass.) 2-1 in going 2-2 and taking third in its division, one place out of the playoffs.
