The Princeton-based Coalition for Peace Action (CFPA) is hosting a presentation by Matthew Hoh, a former Marine captain in Iraq who later became a State Department consultant in Afghanistan, is slated for 7:30 p.m. Jan.uary 18 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, 50 Cherry Hill Road, just up the hill from the light at the intersection of Route 206 and Cherry Hill Road. There is plenty of free parking at the church.
In September 2009, Mr. Hoh became the first U.S. official to publicly resign in protest of U.S. policy in Afghanistan. His resignation was featured in The Washington Post, as well as other media. Mr. Hoh is now director of the Afghanistan Study Group which last August issued a report which was endorsed by 40 top experts entitled "A New Way Forward: Rethinking US Strategy in Afghanistan."
"We are pleased and honored to have someone of Matthew Hoh’s stature to accurately inform us so we can question and challenge current U.S. policy in Afghanistan, and advocate for more peaceful alternatives. Nearly 1,500 U.S. troops have died, and we are spending over $100 billion per year to keep 100,000 troops stationed there. It’s time to bring our troops and those badly needed funds home," said the Rev. Robert Moore, CFPA executive director.
The presentation is free and open to the public. It is part of the efforts over a number of years by CFPA to educate and advocate for ending the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan and replacing it with more peaceful alternatives. There will be questions and answers following Mr. Hoh’s presentation.
