The Bordentown High boys bowling team had an another opportunity to see where it stands among the top teams in the state.
And right now the Scotties stand in a pretty good position.
Bordentown finished ninth overall in the 45-team field at the Central Jersey Classic, which was held last Saturday at Brunswick Zone Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick.
"I think most of the big powerhouse teams in New Jersey were there except for some of the schools in Camden and Gloucester counties," Bordentown coach Ron Jones said. "Everyone else was there. All of the power teams from Central Jersey were there."
The Scotties finished with a total of 3,022, while top finisher Sayreville had a score of 3,310. Most of the schools that finished ahead of Bordentown were Group 4 schools from Middlesex County.
"When we go to a tournament like this our goal is to finish in the top five," Jones said. "I told the boys that for me, to have us finish in the top 10 meant we had done something. Most of those schools are Group 3 and Group 4 schools. I was very pleased with how we did."
The Scotties were led by Austin Papp, who had a high game of 256 and rolled a 686 series. Jeremy Schaeffer had a high game of 235 and a 668 series, while Travis Raynor rolled a 236 high game and finished with a 615 series.
"Our guys are bowling very well," said Jones, whose boys and girls teams both had 7-0-1 records entering the week. "This was our second competition with some of the bigger schools. The last time in December we finished seventh at the Warren Wheeler Tournament. It was basically the same schools, but not quite as many."
So far this season the Scotties have shown they can go toe-to-toe with the top bowling teams in the state. Last weekend was just another indication of where they stand.
