One day my daughters came home from school with a tale of a crazy man who dumped trash all over the cafeteria, and took items out of the trash to be recycled.
Of course, I later learned that the crazy in question was Ralph Copleman, on a mission to leave this part of the planet greener and more sustainable than he found it.
Ralph’s passing this week is a great loss to our community, if I may be so bold, to our planet.
Among other things, he founded Sustainable Lawrence, and an early supporter of the Lawrence Nature Center. An equal opportunity motivator, his message of sustainability went to young and old, converts and the unaware alike.
He was above all else an inspiration to take small steps, but to think before you toss, buy, or consume.
I heard you, Ralph, and I will remember.
