The Mercer County One Stop Career Center has partnered with Rutgers University on a new endeavor to help troubled teens finish their education.
One-Stop has utilized federal funding to start the initiative, called TEEM (Transitional Education & Employment Management), which aims to bring resources and services to 40 young adults aged 18 to 21 who have either dropped out of school or who graduated high school but are unemployed.
TEEM targets youth who have been unsuccessful due to the severity of barriers impeding their success, including truancy, basic skills deficiency, pregnancy or parenting issues, homelessness, legal issues, or lack of significant work history.
This initiative will bring enhanced services to the recently established Trenton YES center located within the Trenton Daylight/Twilight High School. Services include assessment (basic skills, interests, aptitude), individualized service plan, workplace readiness career development, internships, community engagement, occupational training, entrepreneurial skill development, "life skills" development (conflict resolution, anger management, team building, alcohol & drug awareness), and job placement assistance.
Primary goals are the completion of a high school diploma/GED attainment and/or entry into post-secondary education or job attainment.
Interested youth should contact the Mercer County One Stop Career Center Youth Office at (609) 989-7980 or attend a Youth Services Orientation held the first and second Thursday of each month at 3 p.m. The One Stop is located at 26 Yard Ave., Trenton.
