MONTGOMERY: Police to start inspection checkpoints

By Stephanie Vaccaro, Staff Writer
The Montgomery Police Department in conjunction with the state Motor Vehicle Commission Mobile Inspection Team will conduct eight checkpoints in 2011.
The checkpoints will be on Route 206, south of Route 518, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following days: today, Friday, Feb. 10, March 24, June 22, Sept. 16, Oct. 17, Nov. 10, and Dec. 8.
Officers will focus on vehicle inspection issues, but drivers can be stopped for all visible motor vehicle infractions. Inspection violators may be issued a summons and forwarded to the MVC inspectors where their vehicles are subjected to emissions testing. Other offenders can be issued summonses and depending on the violation continue on their way, the department said in a statement.
”The purpose is enforcement of all motor vehicle laws delivered in a manner that is highly visible to the motoring public,” Lt. James Curry said. “There is a specific component that focuses on inspection violations, and those targeted violators have their vehicles inspected on the spot by NJMVC and a passed decal affixed to those that meet the requirements.”
They will not stop all cars, only those committing a motor vehicle offense, including inspection violations, Lt. Curry said.
The Montgomery Police Department has been involved on a voluntary basis in this joint activity with NJMVC mobile inspection unit for about 10 years, Lt. Curry said. Many police departments throughout the state participate in the program.
