Park commission offers programs

BASKING RIDGE – The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center at 190 Lord Stirling Road has scheduled naturalist-led programs.
Frogsicles and Popsicles – Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Children ages 3 to 5 with a parent will take a walk outside to discover a special frog that freezes in winter rather than hibernates and make a popsicle.
The cost is $10 per pair and $5 per additional child.
Whale of a Tail – Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Children ages 4 to 6 will learn about the planet’s largest mammal followed by crafts and stories. The cost is $10 per person.
Fossils, Footprints and Fun – Thursday, Jan. 20, from 4 to 5 p.m.
Children ages 4 to 6 will discover the secrets of fossils as they inquire, observe and create "fossils." The cost is $6 per person.
Feed the Birds – Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Children ages 7 to 9 will learn about different types of birds and which food will attract them to the backyard feeder in winter. The cost is $9 per person.
It’s a Wild, Wild World – Friday, Jan. 21, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Children ages 3 to 5 with a parent will join a naturalist for an adventurous walk into the swamp to find as many critters as they can. The cost is $10 per pair and $5 per additional child.
Nature Through a Child’s Eye – Daily through Sunday, Feb. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except holidays.
The entire family will see the annual environment and nature art show, featuring works from children from kindergarten through grade six in Somerset County schools. Admission is free.
Winter Backyard Birds – Saturday, Jan. 22, from 1 to 2 p.m.
Family and friends will learn to identify birds by sight, learning the basics of bird behavior, biology and identification. The cost is $6 per person.
