Mary Mother of God Team Mondoro went undefeated in tournament play and won the 4th grade "A" Championships of the 2010 St. Matthias Tournament. The Saints picked up the title with a decisive 43-12 win over St. Matthias on December 30 at Rutgers Prep in Somerset.
St. Matthias struck first with two quick baskets, but the Saints responded with baskets from Nicholas Scerbo (who finished with 18 points, leading all scorers), Prescott Quackenbush (four points), and Andre Scheflen (two points). The Saints opened up a 16-4 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Andrew Lagerman found his shooting range, scoring five of his nine points before halftime. Going into the half, the Saints had stretched their lead to 25-8.
Coming off the break, the Saints continued to rely on aggressive rebounding, solid passing and balanced scoring. Norman Washington (four points) paced the second half scorers. Jaden Bailey, Johnny Gadaleta and Josh Kanter each contributing to the second half scoring for the team.
Defensively, the team had another strong rebounding effort, with Ryan Padgett pulling five off the glass and Brishan Patel adding three rebounds. Quackenbush, Kanter and Washington also played an aggressive defense at the low post.
