The YWCA Princeton has planned a unique series of celebrations each Friday in February commemorating Black History Month and the contributions of African Americans throughout U.S. history. Each evening is designed to be an event that individuals of all ages and can participate.
Performers will share their knowledge and talents representing the African-American experience. These interactive events promise to delight. We invite you to join us each week and to kick up your heels at our huge swing dance event in true retro style!
Everyone is invited to attend – individuals, families, and community groups. The evenings are about interactive immersions and fun.
There are a number of workshops from which to choose. In the “Hip Hop Master Class” one will learn about the history, moves, and dance steps of the hip hop movement.
Dave Merritt, The Drum & Dance Learning Center, will lead a “West African Percussion Workshop”, giving participants hands-on opportunity to learn the tones and rhythms on West African Percussion instruments: the djembe, dounoun and bell.
Audry Davis will lead “African Dance Master Class with Live Percussion” which explores the richness of African Dance traditions from Guinea and Mali Empire. There will be live music for in this dance workshop.
The month wraps up with a huge event, Savoy Swing Dance Party, for an evening of swing dancing, jazz music, and food. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in retro costumes or as is to enjoy great music, culture and lots of dancing! Open to all ages including children. Proceeds from this event will support the Bates Scholarship Fund.
