Registration has begun for the Spring 2011 semester at the Evergreen Forum, which marks the beginning of the second decade of this daytime study-and-discussion program. A wide variety of subjects are offered, ranging from Latin American Literature to Jazz. Classes meet during the day at the Princeton Senior Resource Center, located at 45 Stockton St., starting the first week of March.
"We are pleased to be able to continue offering a great variety of courses," says Evergreen chair Edith Jeffrey. "Our 16 courses cover music, literature, politics, history, religion, and science, all taught by authorities in their fields or people with a passion for their subjects."
Classes, which begin March 4, include "American Women Composers," "More Shakespeare Off the Page," and "Great Decisions 2011," as well as the always popular "Science Tuesday on Friday." Courses generally last for 2 hours each week and run for eight sessions unless otherwise noted. Full-length courses cost $55. A full schedule and detailed course descriptions as well as printable registration forms are available online at www.theevergreenforum.org. Brochures with complete listings are available at area libraries, retirement communities, and at the PSRC.
While registration will continue until classes begin, Ms. Jeffrey recommends registering early.
"It’s important to register by Feb. 8," she says. "Some of our classes are so popular that they are oversubscribed. When that happens we hold a lottery to select the students. Feb. 9 is our lottery date. We keep a waiting list and, if openings occur, those on the list are invited to join the course."
The Evergreen Forum is a volunteer organization sponsored by the PSRC. It was founded in 2000 to support lifelong learning with an emphasis on discussion and participation. Over the years courses have examined such topics as Health Care and Our Future, Religion and Politics in Early American Culture, and the Arts and Crafts Movement.
Susan Hoskins, the PSRC’s executive director, comments that "it is important for older people to continue to be intellectually engaged throughout life. The exciting thing for me about Evergreen is its interactive, stimulating character."
