The Mark Morris Dance Group/Brooklyn Parkinson Group will collaborate with Plainsboro-based DanceVision and the Kingston-based Parkinson Alliance to offer a free "Dance for PD" master class with live music on Saturday (Jan. 15) at 2:30 p.m. in DanceVision’s facility in PDT Studio @ Forrestal Village, 116 Rockingham Row, Plainsboro.
The 90-minute pilot class, which will be taught by "Dance for PD" founding teachers David Leventhal and John Heginbotham from the Mark Morris Dance Group, will assess interest in creating an ongoing class to be taught by local teachers. Participants will explore elements of modern dance, ballet, tap, social dancing and Mark Morris company repertory in an enjoyable, non-pressured environment.
The "Dance for PD" teaching approach is built on a fundamental premise: professionally-trained dancers are movement experts whose knowledge is useful to persons with PD.
"Dance for PD" classes started at the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn in 2001 and have since been replicated in more than 40 other communities around the world. Classes are appropriate for anyone with PD, no matter how advanced.
To register, interested participants should call 609-688-0020. Pre-registration is required. More information about the program is available at www.danceforpd.org.
