Shockers off to 3-0 start in HEWYBL Senior play

Don’t be shocked. The Shockers won again.
Daniel McCarthy scored 13 points and Mikey Kminek added 11 as the Wichita State Shockers took a 45-35 win over the Villanova Wildcats in HEWYBL Senior Division basketball play last weekend. The win improved the Shockers to 3-0.
The Wildcats were led by Jalen Heartsfeld, who had 17 points, and Ryan McGinley (6).
The UCSC Banana Slugs took a 43-36 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights as Brandon Connaughton popped in 21, Austin Kurey had 13 and Devin Russo added nine. Glen Davies had 16 points for the Knights while Anthony Thillet added eight.
In early-season games, UCSC topped Villanova, 49-29, as Kurey had 12, Connaughton added nine and Ben Danis tabbed seven. The Wildcats got 17 from Sean Tierny.
The Shockers edged Rutgers, 32-30, in overtime as Kevin Lenart had the go-ahead bucket in OT. McCarthy led the way with eight points and Davies had 12 for the Knights.
The Shockers took a 32-24 win over the Banana Slugs as Lenart provided slick ball handling skills while scoring 11 points. Randy Crianza was everywhere on defense to create turnovers. Connaughton (10 points) and Kurey (7) led the Slugs.
Rutgers topped Villanova, 46-26, as Davies exploded for 30 points and 20 rebounds. Sean Tierny had nine for the ‘Cats and Emily Losey played strong defense and scored six points.
