Over a half foot of snow covered Monroe, Jamesburg and Cranbury from Tuesday night to early Wednesday morning while about 1 foot was expected.
Cranbury, Monroe and Jamesburg schools were all closed Wednesday as the plows cleared and salted the roads.
Monroe’s Public Works Department was out preparing the roads by 7 p.m. Tuesday night, said Wayne Horbatt, superintendent of Monroe Public Works.
”Pretty much every road had at least one pass (by Public Works snowplows) by 4:30 a.m.,” he said.
A dozen workers worked from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to clear the 140 miles of Monroe Township municipal roads.
A second shift, which wound up being the regular day shift, came in at 3:30 a.m. to relieve the first shift and worked until 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, he said.
”We had only one breakdown out of 24 trucks,” Mr. Horbatt said. “Last storm, we had guys getting stuck.”
He added that the snow for this storm, about eight or nine inches, was lighter than the snow from the storm the day after Christmas, thus, easier to push.
”It was less than expected,” Mr. Horbatt said of the recent storm.
The main municipal roads were “down to the blacktop” by Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Horbatt said.
