A book fair hosted recently at the Princeton MarketFair Barnes & Noble by the Stony Brook Elementary School netted the school over $3,000 to purchase new books for the school library.
The Stony Brook Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) worked with Barnes & Noble Booksellers in this effort to raise funds for its school library to ensure all students have access to books to further their reading and academic skills. The book fair, held in-store in November, along with an online shopping component that lasted until the end of that month, was heralded as great success by both Stony Brook and Barnes & Noble. A strong turnout filled the store throughout the day.
A fun-filled day of events and activities took place at the bookstore to foster community building and to share children’s literature. Children’s stories were read aloud to the students by Hopewell Valley Regional School District Superintendent Thomas Smith, Stony Brook Principal Steven Wilfing and school media specialist Marci Thomas.
Performances by the school chorus, poetry readings by students, a scavenger hunt, family bingo, arts and crafts and pictures with the school’s mascot "Rocky The All-Star" also took place throughout the day.
"We would like to thank all the parents and the larger Stony Brook/Pennington community for coming out to support our book fair with Barnes & Noble," said Mr. Wilfing. "This was a great community-building event that directly benefited our school. Thanks to our supporters, we are now able to purchase many books from our teachers’ wish lists to fill our library shelves with the best books for our student community."
In honor of the event, a school-wide contest was held to name a special school spirit smoothie sold at the Barnes & Noble cafe during the book fair. The blue and white vanilla-flavored beverage, dubbed "Rocky’s Boppin’ Blue Blast," was featured to celebrate the school’s colors and mascot.
