Health fair to offer information, screenings

Free, basic health information, flu shots and health screenings will be available at the second annual Community Health Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at the United Reformed Church, 100 W. Main St., Somerville. Admission is free.
In the event of snow, the health fair will be postponed to Sunday, Jan. 30. If the event has to be postponed because of the weather, the church will have a message on its phone – 908-125-4545.
This event is being sponsored by Temple Beth-El, 67 Route 206, Hillsborough, in partnership with the United Reformed Church to improve the quality of life in Somerset County.
The health fair will feature basic health screenings and will offer attendees the opportunity to talk to doctors and specialists about a broad array of health concerns, and obtain information about local health resources that are available to help families and individuals in Somerset County.
Some of the free services, screenings and tests that will be available are:
– Free flu shots
– HIV screening and counseling (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School HIV Counseling Department, New Brunswick)
– Blood glucose testing and cholesterol screening (Somerset Medical Center)
– Blood pressure testing
– Vision and glaucoma screening
– Hearing testing
– Body mass index
– Posture evaluation
– Foot evaluation
Temple Beth-El offers a special "thank you" to Digestive Healthcare Center, Hillsborough, and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, for providing the blood pressure equipment for the health fair, and to Somerset Medical Center for providing the blood glucose and cholesterol screening.
Free information on Parkinson’s disease, sleep disorders, trauma and injury prevention, and women’s health also will be available.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Project of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, which promotes breast cancer awareness among minority women, will provide information and present its theatrical presentation, "Sharing Stories/Compartiendo Historias."
Practitioners and organizations that will be making their services available for the health fair include:
– Judy Bounan: Registered dietician, Bridgewater;
– Isadore Ehrlich, O.D., Pearle Vision, Bridgewater: vision and glaucoma screening;
– El Poder Sobre Diabetes, Somerset Medical Center Diabetes Center, Somerville: Diabetes education and counseling for clients who are at risk or newly diagnosed with diabetes;
– Linda Esposito, R.N., Ph.D., Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Program of New Jersey: Provide information on SIDS;
– Family Foot & Ankle Specialists, Hillsborough: Podiatrists will provide free foot screenings and educational tools on foot health, diabetic foot care, children’s feet, heel pain, shoe selection and more;
– David Herman, M.D., ID Care, Hillsborough and Somerset: Answer questions on the flu, Lyme disease, HIV and other infectious diseases;
– Gregory Hirsch, M.D. (OB/GYN), Hillsborough: Answer questions about female health issues, including breast cancer, and provide screening questionnaires;
– Ivy Rehab Physical Therapy, Hillsborough: posture screening;
– Glen Landesman and Joseph Smith, M.D.s, Your Doctors Care, Hillsborough: Review health history forms and answer questions pertaining to family medicine and nutrition;
– Amy Lazar. M.D., ENT & Allergy Associates, Somerville: Preliminary screening for head and neck cancer and for certain types of hearing loss;
– Deborah Neiman, M.D., Step Ahead Weight Loss Center, Hillsborough and Bedminster: Conduct Body Mass Index (BMI) tests, answer questions and provide information about weight loss;
– Planned Parenthood;
– Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, HIV Counseling Department, New Brunswick;
– Leonard Siskin, D.C.: Provide chiropractic assessment and information about the benefits of chiropractic medicine and massage therapy;
– Kevin Skole, M.D.: Provide information and answer questions about colon cancer screening;
– Somerset Medical Center;
