SOUTH BRUNSWICK – High school class registration goes electronic

By Mary Brienza, Staff Writer
Township high school students now have to register for next semester’s courses online, according to officials.
Diane Bollaci, technology coordinator at South Brunswick High School, said she set up the electronic registration with some assistance.
Ms. Bollaci said it was something the district saw in other high schools and thought it would work for the township.
”It is a good way to go forward,” Ms. Bollaci said.
Ms. Bollaci said high school Principal Timothy Matheney thought electronic registration would be “more efficient” and ecologically and economically sound by saving the district money since the cost of printing the approximately 3,000 course selection books is high.
This is the first year for the electronic registration, and South Brunswick is among the first high schools to implement electronic registration, according to Ms. Bollaci.
Ms. Bollaci said electronic registration prepares students for college registration, and it is a “look into the future.” There are directions on how to register on the high school’s website.
Ms. Bollaci said creating the electronic registration was a “very involved procedure” that took a few months and allows the students and their parents to view courses and enter which ones the student would like to take.
The students will meet with their counselor after registering, and incoming freshmen could start registering by picking their elective courses Friday and continue to register through Jan. 28.
Students going into grades 10, 11 and 12 can register Feb. 11-25, Ms. Bollaci said.
Recent snowstorms caused registration to be pushed back, Ms. Bollaci said.
Ms. Bollaci said there would be “support sessions” for parents to help with registration, which will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the high school writing lab.
Parents of incoming freshmen have support sessions Jan. 25 and 27, Ms. Bollaci said.
Support sessions for the parents of all other students are scheduled for Feb 15, 17, 22 and 24, Ms. Bollaci said.
Electronic registration is the only way students can register for classes, Ms. Bollaci said.
To register, students and their parents must log into the system through the Parent Portal part of Family Connect at http://connection.naviance.com/sbrunswick.
The student’s academic record also can be viewed through Family Connect, and parents were sent a letter with a username and password to Family Connect, Ms. Bollaci said.
If parents are not registered for Family Connect or lost their password and username, they should call their child’s counselor or the support line at 732-798-2460.
There are prerequisites in place to help guide students to pick courses as students need to meet the criteria for some courses, Ms. Bollaci said.
