Hopewell Valley Central High School is hosting the third annual Teen Wellness Day on Monday in the gymnasium. The program is sponsored by HVCHS’ Wellness Committee and a team of volunteers from a wide range of agencies and health care providers.
Students in grades nine-12 attend the program during their wellness period to gain a more in-depth understanding of various topics, such as nutrition, stress management, addiction prevention, safe driving, mental, medical and dental health care.
Teen Wellness Day is an interactive learning experience for the students as they visit and connect with each health expert.
The organizations include Capital Health, HiTOPs, Princeton Dermatology, Dental Health Associates, Mercer Council on Alcohol and Drug Addiction, PEAC Health & Fitness, Eating Matters, Sodexho, NJ State Police, NJ Department of Highway Traffic Safety, Council on Compulsive Gambling, YWCA Breast Cancer Resource Center and several more.
The event will include global health topics, courtesy of the high school’s Model WHO Club. The student-led club will conduct a used-cell phone drive. In Kenyan villages cell phones and texting is used to facilitate communication efforts to prevent widespread infections and other health initiatives.
Kiki Enderle, CHS athletic director andwellness supervisor, said of the previous year’s experience, "Our Wellness Day was a huge success. Not only did it add to our current curriculum, it was a refreshing change of pace for our teachers and students. Students were actively engaged with the various vendors who were present and hopefully learned more about living a healthy and lengthy lifestyle."
Teen Wellness Day is a collaborative effort with help and planning from the Hopewell Valley Municipal Alliance, CHS Wellness staff and parent volunteers. The event sponsors are seeking additional health-related professionals.
