During the month of January, kindergarteners through fifth-graders at Bear Tavern, Stony Brook, and Toll Gate Grammar schools each had a special opportunity to spend the day with children’s author, Dan Gutman. He spent a full day at each school, presenting funny, engaging assemblies to students about his books, his characters and what life is like being an author.
He wrote stories with fifth-graders during workshops, and read his poem, "Casey Back At Bat," to the kindergarten classes. The students were inspired to read and write and consider becoming authors themselves.
Mr. Gutman’s visit was sponsored by the elementary parent-teacher organizations in collaboration with the Hopewell Valley Education Foundation, which helps fund an Author-In-Residence program every year. This program brings authors to all of the district’s schools.
The HVEF raised several thousand dollars at this year’s Book Lovers Luncheon in November, to fund Mr. Gutman’s visit. Next fall, he will visit the Hopewell Elementary School.
