The Division I women’s basketball team from Lawrenceville gave their support to the youth basketball team of Lawrenceville, and a fine time was had by all.
The Lawrence Cardinals U12 girls basketball team recently received a surprise visit by the Rider University women’s basketball team at a practice session, much to the thrill the players and coaches Terry Bannon and Rob Rothenberg.
"We are always looking to liven up practice," Bannon said. "We reached out to (coach) Lynn Donovan-Milligan about having some team members come work out with the team and give the girls a few pointers.
"We didn’t hear anything for a few months, then Lynn called and said they were coming and the entire team showed up (last) Tuesday. Our girls were star-struck! And the Rider players were just awesome. They were enthusiastic, funny and really engaged the younger girls."
The Lady Broncs ran the U12s through their paces, conducting a session that lasted over an hour and included non-stop drills and contests.
"The girls were exhausted but never had more fun playing basketball," Bannon said. "It was really great and the Rider women are great ambassadors for the university. They are right in the middle of their conference schedule and somehow found themselves with five days off between games.
"When I was in school, I knew guys who would have used that time to lay around their dorm room surrounded by empty soda cans and pizza boxes, but the Rider team came and they were great."
Members of the U12 team include Saumya Shetty, Melissa Rothenberg, Jennifer Zoll, Sarah Zoll, Nelle Evans, Alexis Davis, Shrya Shetty, Katie Smith, Ally Bannon and Haley Skove.
