A Bound Brook man was killed walking in the right lane of Route 1 in the early morning hours of Jan. 20, police said.
Peter Jacob, 41, was killed on Route 1 North by Whispering Woods Boulevard near Autumn Drive at 12:51 a.m. that Thursday, Sgt. James Ryan said.
After investigating, police said that Mr. Jacob was driving home from his job in Ewing when he apparently experienced some unknown trouble with his car.
Mr. Jacob, who was wearing dark clothing, began to walk north, with his back to traffic, in the right hand lane of Route 1 for assistance, possibly to a nearby gas station, Sgt. Ryan said.
Mr. Jacob was then struck by a 2004 Mitsubishi Gallant driven by 39 year old Jennifer M. Krystofiak of Dunellen, who said she could not see him on in the roadway, police said.
Mr. Jacob was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick after being transported from the scene by the Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad, Sgt. Ryan said.
Mr. Jacob’s disabled car was later located by police in a residential townhouse parking lot near where he was hit, Sgt. Ryan said.
The investigation has been concluded and no charges will be filed against Ms. Krystofiak, Sgt. Ryan said.
Sgt. Ryan said that the rule for walking and running on the roadways is that residents should walk on the shoulder, off the road as much as possible, walking towards traffic.
Sgt. Ryan also said walkers should be very cautious around busy roadways and that snow on the sides makes it more difficult.
