Why is Hillsborough taking the time (for the past five months) to consider Sonic’s request to build a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week drive-in on a lot that is so severely undersized that 22 separate waivers and 5 variances are required. The proposed sign square footage would be 100% larger than existing code – 100 percent! It would rise 13% higher than any other business sign in town.
Should Sonic have the ability to build a franchise in town? Absolutely. Should they be allowed to jam their drive-in on property that does not conform to existing parking, loading space, signage, buffers, size of parking stalls and aisle widths? Absolutely not.
