Fobes, D’Elia capture gymnastics honors

Former local scholastic standouts Austyn Fobes (Howell High School) and Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck High School) are making their mark in college gymnastics.

The Eastern Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) recently named Fobes its Gymnast of the Week and D’Elia its Gymnast Specialist of the Week.

Fobes, a sophomore at the University of New Hampshire, sparked New Hampshire to a win over previously undefeated Pittsburgh.

Fobes won the floor exercise (9.825) and tied for second place in the all-around (38.625), scoring 9.8 on vault, 9.725 on uneven bars and 9.275 on balance beam. She placed second on those events.

In a loss to Penn State, Fobes scored a team-high 39.025 in the all-around and was third on vault (9.8) and floor exercise (9.8).

This was the first EAGL award for the former Howell standout.

At Howell, Fobes won the NJSIAA all-around championship as well as the Central Jersey and Shore Conference all-around titles. Howell won three consecutive Shore Conference A North Division team championships during Fobes’ scholastic career, as well as a Shore Conference crown and a Central Jersey state title.

D’Elia is a sophomore at Rutgers University. She won three of four events in the Scarlet Knights’ quad meet victory over North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Brown, as Rutgers scored a season-high 192.05 points. D’Elia won the uneven bars (9.825), balance beam (9.75) and floor exercise (9.85).

This is D’Elia’s first season with the Scarlet Knights. She transferred to Rutgers from Central Michigan. This was her first EAGL weekly award.

At Colts Neck, D’Elia was a state place-winner.

When they are not competing in college, Fobes and D’Elia are teammates at Galaxy Gymnastics, Howell, where they are coached by Jennifer Fobes and Kristin Sheridan.
