MANVILLE: Council recognizes Eagle Scout

COUNCIL NOTES

By Mary Ellen Zangara, Special Writer
The first official meeting of the New Year for the Manville Borough Council was held on Jan. 24 with the two newly elected council members taking their seats. Sue Asher returned for another term while Lou Petzinger began his first term.
First on the agenda was a proclamation presented by Mayor Lillian Zuza to Boy Scout Tyler Minegar for accomplishing the rank of Eagle Scout.
”Tyler Minegar has served the Boy Scouts in an exemplary manner and is deserving of the honor bestowed upon him. Tyler Minegar through his efforts serves as an encouragement to the youth of the Borough of Manville,” the proclamation said.
Business included passing resolutions regarding appropriation transfers, tax collector adjustments, the engineering and recycling contracts with the county and the professional services agreement for Francis P. Linnus Esq.
Items of new business included the Planning Board recommending revisions to the proposed telecommunications ordinance. The ordinance will be introduced at the next council meeting. A shared services agreement with Montgomery Township for salt for the roads in snowstorms was unanimously accepted by the council members.
During the public session, resident Clyde Havrilla expressed his concerns about the public handicapped parking on William Street where currently there are no parking spaces marked. This will be looked into by the public safety committee. Mr. Havrilla also asked about a larger tax break for veterans but was told that the $250 was the state mandate.
The Borough Council members praised the Public Works Department for its snow removing efforts during the past snowstorms. Council President Sherri Lynn also commended the police department, and the announcements on the website and the new phone alerts to residents.
Concerns were raised about people blocking the firehouse on North 13th Avenue when a train is present as the fire trucks cannot get out may be solved by having a yellow painted area in front of the firehouse preventing cars from blocking the area.
Councilman Lou Fischer reported that all the Manville Recreation programs are in full swing and are doing quite well, especially the walking program at Manville High School.
The next Borough Council meetings are scheduled for Monday, Feb. 14 and Monday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Manville Municipal Courtroom.
