February 13-19, 2011 is Children of Alcoholics (COA) Week. COA Week
celebrates the recovery of the many thousands of children (of all ages)
who have received help to recover from the pain and losses suffered in their
childhood due to a parent’s addiction to alcohol. This week also offers hope to
those still suffering from the adverse impact of parental alcohol and drug
addiction. Addiction to alcohol or drugs is a family disease. When one member of
the family has an addiction problem, all family members are affected. COAs need to know
that the addiction of a loved one is not their fault. They did not cause the
disease and they cannot make it stop. COAs can take care of themselves by
joining a support group, talking with a counselor, and learning more about the disease of addiction. For more information about
resources for COAs, contact Chip Meara, Mercer Council on Alcoholism and Drug
Addiction at 609-396-5874.
