OLD BRIDGE — A township man was attempting to cross Route 9 on his way to work Feb. 10 when he was struck and killed by a motor vehicle, according to authorities.
Davender Singh, 36, was crossing the highway near Ferry Road to begin his 6 a.m. shift at 7-Eleven when a car, driven by 57- year-old Marlboro resident Robert Topal, struck him, according to Old Bridge Police Capt. Arthur Carullo.
Singh had just exited a southbound bus at the Ferry Road bus stop and walked a short distance along the highway before attempting to cross to get to the convenience store, located on Route 9 north, Carullo said. There was no crosswalk, traffic signal or other traffic control device at the location where Singh crossed, he said.
Singh, who was struck in the southbound lane, was pronounced dead on the scene, Carullo reported.
Two lanes on Route 9 south were closed for more than four hours as police investigated the accident.
A similar accident involving an Old Bridge commuter occurred in October. Sixtyyear old George Mauceri was crossing the highway near the intersection of Jake Brown Road shortly after getting off at his bus stop when he was struck by a car. Mauceri also crossed at a location that had no clear traffic control.
Old Bridge police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office are in the process of investigating last week’s accident. No summonses have been issued, Carullo said.
Police asked that anyone with information about the accident contact Officer John Bulin at 732-679-5959.
