EAST WINDSOR Motorists running red lights along Route 130 through East Windsor may want to start smiling. They soon may be caught on camera.
Township Council voted 6-0 Tuesday to begin soliciting proposals to install traffic light cameras here. Councilman Perry Shapiro was not at the meeting.
Mayor Janice Mironov told the Herald the township already has made applications to the state Department of Transportation to install the cameras. Though these approvals were still needed, the township was “right near the top of the waiting list” for them, she said.
The cameras are planned for the Route 130 and Princeton-Hightstown Road intersection as well as the Route 130 and Dutch Neck Road intersection.
Mayor Mironov said the township hopes to have the proposals within five weeks.
Defending the township’s decision to install the cameras, which cost the township nothing but likely will come with an agreement to split some of the ticket money with the company installing the lights, Mayor Mironov said studies have shown that areas using the cameras had a decrease in motor vehicle incidents such as accidents.
The tickets issued from the cameras will not include any points against a driver’s license.
