The Princeton Township Committee was scheduled to vote last night to approve the appointment of Capt. Robert Buchanan to the role of police chief.
It is something that was decided in closed session, Capt. Buchanan said yesterday afternoon. The committee vote will make it official.
Capt. Buchanan has served on the police force of Princeton Township for 31 years.
Born and raised in Princeton, he joined the Princeton Township Police Department on April 1, 1980, as a patrol officer. He has held the positions of detective, sergeant, lieutenant and captain.
Capt. Buchanan holds an associate’s degree from Rider University in law enforcement and a bachelor of science from the College of New Jersey in criminal justice. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
The swearing in was scheduled for Monday evening as well, he said.
He replaces former Chief Mark V. Emann, who was charged with third-degree theft by deception by purposely obtaining two weapons, valued at $2,400.
The accusation involved the trade of an antique weapon owned by the township Police Department for a rifle and revolver for the chief’s personal use, in addition to several rifles and other equipment on June 1, 2007.
The former chief was relieved of duty in October 2010. He entered a pretrial intervention program that requires a 12-month period of supervision, 40 hours of community service and restitution,
