Thumbs up to the Princeton Borough Council for approving a new sandwich board-style sign on the corner of Nassau and Chambers streets to help make shoppers and tourists more aware of the businesses on Chambers Street.
The merchants there say that people often get to the end of the businesses on Nassau Street, see the church and think they’re at the end of the shopping district and turn around.
The sign will be attractive and professional green with gold lettering and be 2 feet wide by 3 feet high and it will be brought in every night.
It will list the businesses that make up Nassau Place and, hopefully, it will be large enough to draw visitors past the church.
One of the business owners said there was a marked increase in foot traffic when a temporary sign was placed there in the past, citing a 25 percent increase on weekdays and 40 percent on weekends.
After the borough disallowed the old sign, he said foot traffic immediately dropped off.
The Borough Council needed to sign off on the sign because it will be on the sidewalk in the borough’s right of way.
In these economic times, businesses should be allowed leeway in an attempt to be successful.
Thankfully, the council saw it that way, too.
