United Way of Greater Mercer County Annouces New President

Jodi Inverso
Lawrenceville, NJ, March 9, 2011- United Way of Greater Mercer County announced that they have named Herbert Klein III President and Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Craig Lafferty, who served as President of the organization since 1994 and retired late last year.
Mr. Klein brings to United Way of Greater Mercer County, strong executive management experience in both for profit and not-for-profit organizations having held executive positions in a wide range of organizations and industries. He is a demonstrated change agent, culture/team builder and catalyst skilled in business creation, business turnaround, and management of rapid growth, for profit and non-profit organizations. In addition, he brings a practical understanding of emerging technologies and their commercial applications having spent several years at both PricewaterhouseCoopers and Accenture.
In discussing his plans for the future, Mr. Klein stated “While I fully expect them to evolve over the next several months, I can outline today four points upon which we will focus: Strengthening our core capabilities, programs, and our ability to deliver on our mission; engaging our community in meaningful ways, focusing on programs and volunteer efforts that deliver lasting change; improving upon and securing our financial future; and operating United Way of Greater Mercer County as a professional organization according to accepted business standards.”
He went on further to say that, “United Way of Greater Mercer County, like most other organizations, both nonprofit and for-profit, face significant challenges in the years ahead. Those that not only survive, but also thrive in the future will be those built on solid ideals with a history of strong execution: from development to program delivery. Wonderful ideas are worth little without the strength of follow-through. It is this culture of converting dreams into reality that will shape United Way of Greater Mercer County’s future.”
Brian Rath, Board Chairman says “We are very excited to have Mr. Klein join United Way of Greater Mercer County. His background, experience and new goals are going to help move the organization forward and build a stronger community.
Peter Crowley, Princeton Regional Chamber of Commerce, President and CEO stated “I look forward to working with Herb Klein and United Way of Greater Mercer County as they bring new partnership opportunities to our community.”
Mr. Klein concluded by adding, “The key to United Way’s approach is creating environments where sustained change can occur over time. In the end, we are measured by the lives we change, not by the numbers that indicate activity yet fail to impact the future. Given the current financial climate, it is no surprise that there will be fewer public dollars available to support future community impact efforts. The reality is that the needs not only remain, but they are increasing for many members of our community, many of whom would never have thought they would ever need assistance.”
