The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services is sponsoring a series of programs about memory loss and dementia at the county Senior Wellness Center, located at 202 Mt. Airy Road. The presentations will be conducted by a representative of the Alzheimer’s Association.
The next program in the series will focus on communication and behaviors associated with dementia. The presentation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 10. Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can cause a person to act in different and unpredictable ways. Some individuals become anxious or aggressive; others repeat questions and gestures; and many people with dementia misinterpret what they see or hear. Because these behaviors can lead to misunderstanding, frustration and tension, the program will review ways that caregivers and loved ones can respond to unpredictable behaviors and communicate effectively with individuals who have dementia. The program is free. Advance registration is required for lunch. Participants are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch, if they choose.
The third and final session in the memory loss series, titled "The Caregiver: Are Your Needs Being Met?," will be held April 14.
