The South Brunswick PAL 8th-grade girls’ basketball team won four games last weekend and capped an undefeated league season.
Playing back to back games, the Vikings beat Monroe every player scored in the first half to take the lead.
Erin Carroll led the way with 16 points, followed by Erica Dwyer and Zojajha Ayub (10 each), Briana Davis and Zoee D’Costa (6 each), Sunna Baig and Rachel Calabro (2 each) and Janae Mayfield (1).
In a 54-31 win over Sayreville, Mayfield and Dwyer combined for 16 first-half points to give SB the lead at the half.
Davis, Baig and Carroll each hit layups to start the second half and extend the lead. D’Costa and Ayub each hit jumpers to seal the win. Dwyer led the way with 17, Mayfield, 10, D’Costa, 8, Ayub and Carroll, 6, Davis, 5 and Baig, 2.
The Vikings also went undefeated in pool play this week in the Clark Winter Tournament.
In a 48-21 win over Cranford, a D’Costa free throw sparked a 12-0 second half run as the Vikings pulled away. Mayfield led the way with 12, followed by Carroll, 10, Ayub, 9, Dwyer, 8, Baig, 4, Davis and Calabro, 2 and D’Costa, 1.
South Brunswick finished the weekend with a 51-45 win over IHM. Mayfield’s two steals for layups and a Dwyer 3-pointer, off a Baig assist, along with a Calabro free throw broke things open in the second half.
A Davis steal late in the game led to Carroll and Ayub combining to hit six straight free throws down the stretch as the Vikings went on for the win. Leading the way were, Carroll, 17, Dwyer, 13, Mayfield, 12, Ayub, 7, Calabro and D’Costa, 1. * * *
Felician College senior Devon Young (Monmouth Junction, NJ/South Brunswick) has been voted to the Capital One Academic All-America Men’s Basketball College Division second team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He is the second Academic All-American, and first such male, in Felician history.
Young carries a 3.70 grade-point average as an accounting major. He has started all 25 games for Felician, and leads the team with 19.1 points (second in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) and 6.5 rebounds per game. A four-year starter at shooting guard and small forward, Young is the Golden Falcons’ all-time leading scorer with 1,893 career points, and also ranks in the top five in school annals in rebounds, assists, and steals.
Young has led the Golden Falcons (12-12, 8-8 CACC) to within a half-game of their third consecutive CACC playoff berth with two games remaining. The MVP of the 2010 CACC Tournament, he helped last year’s Felician squad to a school-record 24 wins, a conference championship, and its first NCAA Tournament bid. He is a two-time all-league performer and also won the 2010 CACC Individual Sportsmanship Award.
The New Jersey Blaze, Central Jersey’s premier program for men’s and women’s minor league soccer, has scheduled Youth Summer Select tryouts for Saturday, March 12 at South Brunswick’s Harvest Woods complex. Girls U8-U16 will tryout from 2 to 3 p.m. U8-U16 boys will showcase from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
