Nominations sought
The Historical Society of Princeton (HSP) is accepting nominations for its 2011 Preservation Awards.
The awards recognize completed work on significant buildings and/or historic landscapes in Princeton Borough and Township or visible from Princeton’s borders. The awards are intended to acknowledge property owners who have exerted extraordinary effort on preservation projects. The 2011 awards will recognize projects completed since January 1, 2009.
Award categories include:
Restoration: returning a property to its documented historic appearance using appropriate materials and maintaining character-defining features.
Rehabilitation: repairing a property, while adapting it for modern use, and respecting its proportions, setting, materials, and character-defining features.
Compatible additions: new construction complementing and subsidiary to the historic property. Such additions need not be in the same style as the original property, but should respond sympathetically to its proportions, height and massing.
In-fill construction: new construction harmonious with and respecting the character and scale of neighboring properties.
Stewardship: preserving a property through extraordinary maintenance efforts.
Advocacy: people or organizations who have educated the public about preservation, have contributed to the preservation of historic resources through documentation and/or advocacy, or contributed to governmental decisions that have preserved historic buildings and landscapes.
For guidance regarding these categories, refer to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties: http://www.nps.gov/history/hps/tps/standguide/.
The deadline for nominations is March 18. Nomination forms are available at http://www.princetonhistory.org/PreservationAwards.cfm.
Please submit forms and supporting materials to Historical Society of Princeton, 158 Nassau Street, Princeton, NJ 08542. Any questions about the process can be e-mailed to [email protected].
Lifelong Creativity
Three Princeton community organizations have joined forces for a May initiative titled Celebrate Lifelong Creativity.
Princeton Public Library, the Arts Council of Princeton, and the Princeton Senior Resource Center, with support from Secure At Home, are collaborating on a series of programs in an effort to acknowledge the benefits of creative involvement and engagement all through life.
Programs are to be announced by each of the three participating organizations. A varied roster of events will be offered by these distinctly different but closely allied community resources.
The effort represents Princeton’s commemoration of Older Americans Month, a national celebration of the senior population. The theme of the national campaign this year is "Connecting the Community."
